About Us

Colin Hawkins - The vineyard dream

Colin Hawkins established the D’Urberville Vineyard near Dorchester in 2011, on part of old Poundbury Farm where his father and grandfather both worked the land before him. His grandfather was acquainted with famous Dorset author Thomas Hardy, hence the name D’Urberville Vineyard. Colin had always dreamt of owning a vineyard. Although it has proved to be a lot of work for a retirement project it is one he is thoroughly enjoying, ably supported by friends, family and the dogs, especially at harvest time!

Our Sparkling Wine

The south-facing vineyard is planted on chalky slopes, geologically the same as those found throughout the Champagne region. The classic champagne grape varieties of Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay form the backbone of the vineyard, with the Bacchus grape variety added this year. The first harvest was in 2014 and the Traditional Method of barrel fermentation followed by two years ageing in the bottle has produced, we think, a striking new member of the elite English school of Sparkling Wines. The plan is to produce limited editions, carefully processed to create elegant unique sparkling wines.

How to buy D'Urberville Sparkling Wine

We have the exclusive first release available at present, which is a sophisticated wine with a pale straw colour, producing a fine bead of bubbles. The nose is alive with aromas of fresh strawberries, red apple and lemon tart. The palate is reminiscent of pear tart tatin with a subtle lime acidity that produces a long, elegant finish.

Please contact Colin directly to discuss tasting, purchase and (we hope) delivery of the D'Urberville Vineyard sparkling wine!
